World Physiotherapy Day

World Physiotherapy Day is celebrated all over the world on 8th September. This day was established in 1996 by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy. It is an opportunity for Physiotherapists all over the world to spread awareness about the crucial role physiotherapy plays in making and keeping people fit, mobile, and independent.
How Physiotherapists Help ?
Physiotherapists are the members of rehabilitation teams that assess, diagnose, and treat physical symptoms. Their aim being to help restore movement and normal bodily functions in cases of illness, injury, and disability. Physiotherapists do not focus on individual factors of injury. Instead, they look at the body as a single unit – treating one symptom is treating another.

During the course of the treatments, they employ different approaches and techniques such as movement therapies, exercise, manual therapy techniques, and aquatic therapy. Other techniques include physical modalities, which helps in healing and easing of pain symptoms. Physiotherapy is not only related to treating diseases/disabilities but has also become an indispensable part of a healthy lifestyle. Everybody wants to be physically fit.

Physiotherapy not only solves this problem but also makes them mentally agile and socially confident. Hence, Physiotherapy helps solve multiple problems.
History of Physiotherapy:
The first practice of physiotherapy started back in the 18th century. Pehr Henrik Ling, known as the FATHER OF SWEDISH GYMASTICS introduced physiotherapy as a practice in 1813 in Sweden. After several years of practice, he founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastics. In this institute, he mainly focused on the massage, exercises, and manipulation. Ling helped physiotherapy in being recognized as a viable profession.

In 1887, physiotherapists were officially recognized by Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare. Other countries soon followed.
In the following years, various methods and techniques were developed in the field of physiotherapy. Modern physiotherapy was established in Britain in the 19th century. From here it spread to other countries allowing people to practice physiotherapy. During the First World War, the role of physiotherapy came into prominence. Women were recruited for rehabilitating injured soldiers leading to the global fame and adoption of this profession.
Pain Areas Physiotherapists Treat:
Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness, and disability. They help in maintaining the health of patients of all ages by focusing on exercises, manual therapy, education, and professional advice. Physiotherapists use their knowledge and skills to improve conditions associated with different systems of our body such as:

  1. Musculoskeletal (back pain, knee pain, sports injuries, arthritis, etc.)
  2. Neurological (stroke, Parkinsonism, GB syndrome, etc.)
  3. Respiratory (asthma, pneumonia, COPD)
  4. Cardiovascular (chronic heart diseases, rehabilitation after heart attack)
